PMOG / The Nethernet
The Nethernet offered players a chance to play a game while browsing the web. Originally called "PMOG: The Passively Multiplayer Online Game", The Nethernet plotted a battle between Order and Chaos across web sites. Using a Firefox browser toolbar, players could leave treasure or traps or create Missions across the web. As you surfed, you would see signs of the battle raging across the web, and you could play your part, or just let the game go by.
The Nethernet was the first large-scale massively-multiplayer online game based in a browser toolbar, spawning an active community and thousands of user-generated Missions. The game was retired in August 2009; the community now resides on irc://freenode/thenethernet.com irc://freenode/pmog and irc://freenode/nethertrivia.
